Well, 51 days to go... And I'm still managing to find humor in everything! For instance, a dear friend of mine sent me this little quip about how kids say the darndest things...
When I was six months pregnant with my third child, my three year old came into the room when I was just getting ready to get into the shower. She said, "Mommy, you are getting fat!" I replied, "Yes, honey, remember Mommy has a baby growing in her tummy". "I know", she replied, "but what's growing in your butt?"
Oh I'm so glad Riley isn't talking in full sentences yet!!
So we had our 32 week checkup yesterday and aside for giving up walking to waddle, all is well. Ryan went with me and absolutely cracked me up in the waiting room. He was flipping through a pregnancy magazine while we waited. Suddenly, he looked over at me asked when I was going to start having that nesting instinct and making all those casseroles to have when Katelyn gets here. Last year, I made probably around seven or so casseroles that I froze, much to Ryan's dismay at the time. But when Riley was born, all I had to do for dinner was tell Ryan to get a casserole out of the freezer and microwave however much he wanted. I didn't want him going hungry!
Doc said that I'll be back to see him in two weeks and that's when the exams get real fun. (Oh, the sarcasm of it all...) He'll be checking her position and for dilation and that sort of thing. He said all the discomfort I'm feeling now that I didn't with Riley is typical of a second pregnancy. He also mentioned that it wasn't really going to ease up until Katelyn gets here. All the contractions I'm experiencing will continue, but aren't indicative of early labor. He did say that if they are less than ten minutes at any regularity and continue to be less than ten minutes apart for any length of time, that I need to give him a call. But, as far as the discomfort, basically to suck it up, rest when I can, and use lots of pillows. This time around is also a little more difficult because last time I wasn't exactly crawling on the floor chasing an almost one year old who acts as if I put Red Bull in his bottle with his seemingly never ending energy...
Then Doc told me that he had to have knee surgery in late January and would not be recovered by my due date. He said that if everything looked favorable (i.e., if my cervix was dilated and a few other things) that he would induce me around January 25 before his surgery. According to Doc, all signs are pointing to her being a healthy 7 or 8 pounder even at 38 weeks. I told him that as long as someone was there with a catcher's mitt when she was ready, it didn't matter who it was. (As long as he or she is board certified with at least a decade or more of med school, that is....) Hopefully that didn't sound crass, but he did chuckle a little and said that we would further discuss our options at the next doctor's visit.
In our opinion, there are really no options to discuss. Katelyn will come when she wants to. I would rather at least have a vague familiarity with the person holding the catcher's mitt, but Ryan pointed out that once I got my epidural and everything was in full swing, he didn't think I'd care too much. After all, when Riley was born, I think my doc then was in the room for a grand total of five minutes. I just hope we get nice nurses! I had fantastic ones in labor and delivery with Riley. Not so much in triage, but the labor and delivery folks were amazing!
Our next appointment is January 2. I'm sure I'll have a lot more information after that appointment. But for now things are rolling - I mean waddling - right along!
