Your baby now weighs about 12 ounces, and you may soon feel like she's practicing martial arts as her initial fluttering movements turn into full-fledged kicks and nudges. You may also discover a pattern to her activity as you get to know her better. Some babies are restless in the evening, for example, just as you're trying to fall asleep. Others get busy during the day.
Sometimes when I stop to think about it, I'm absolutely amazed that there's a little life growing inside me. The whole process is incredible and sometimes I know I take it for granted. Ryan felt La Bean move for the first time tonight. He said it was very faint, almost like feeling a heartbeat. On my end, it felt more like a scene out of the movie Aliens. And I know her movements will only get more intense.
This week was a busy one for us. Riley had a doctor's appointment. He is doing wonderfully and getting so strong. He had to get his little finger pricked to check for anemia and he also had to get a polio vaccination. He's much braver than I am. He didn't even cry at all, just looked somewhat startled and then irritated with the nurse, but afterwards he was fine. While his head circumference is in the fiftieth percentile, his weight and height are still at the twenty-fifth percentile. He's growing at the same rate, which the doctor told me is very good. At this point he's just not going to be the tallest kid in the class.
I do believe, however, he's going to be one of the smartest! He is a constant source of amusement for Ryan and me. Ryan's taught him how to raise his arms in victory whenever he says TOUCHDOWN! It's so cute. Stupid Best Buy still has our camera, otherwise there would be tons of video clips of Ryan saying, "Touchdown! It's good!" as Riley raises his hands as high as he can over his head. We took him out tonight to Beef O'Brady's for the U of L game and he was a hit with the surrounding tables. He is also very good at clapping now. Whenever we watch golf or football and the crowds start clapping, he joins in on cue. He already has so much to teach La Bean.
Just over a week before my next doctor's appointment. I have to remember to get a prescription for a flu shot. Kroger is giving them for $30, but pregnant ladies have to have a script from the doc. I got one last year when I was at U of L and will definitely get one again this year. We're going to get one for Riley too, but through his pediatrician!
La Bean seems like she's going to be quite the athlete. At least, I think she would win a gold medal in the prenatal Olympics with all the gymnastics she's doing in my belly. I know that Ryan and I will do our best to make sure that all our babies - and we - stay active. We've become members of the Zoo and I know that will be good for all of us. We took Riley there today and it really is a workout pushing the stroller up hills that appear at times to be leading the way to the summit of Mount Everest. Not that I did that much pushing, though. I told Ryan I was already carrying one baby; he could push the other one. I'll be so glad, too, when I get back into the Y - most likely next month.
One of the most important things I can do for my babies is to lead by example and I want them to be very healthy and active. And one of the most important things I want to do for my husband is to be healthy and active so I can keep up with him!
